This adds a couple of centimetres to the overall thickness, but completely transforms its abilities (see a video, top right).

The sensors can form crude images when infrared light bounces off an object (see images, right). This could allow the screen to identify hand gestures or to see objects, and let them interact with onscreen images.

A recent article posted on Newlaunches.com reports that Sharp created a nice Proof of Concept LCD screen which could doubble as a scanner or as a method of capturing multi-touch input.

"It's all of 3.5-inches but this LCD Screen from Sharp features an integrated optical scanner that could be used to scan business cards, but also be used as a method for multi-touch input. The prototype was seen at the Ceatec exhibition. Possible uses include the ability to recognize fingers or other objects and as biometric lock on your phone. And since each pixel has a scanner it may as well be a multi-touch screen."

"The Project aims to implement a microholographic recording techniques which record data to nanostructures in the recording process. By combining multilayer storage and holographic multiplexing, "microholography" allows data to be stored in three dimensions. The technology works by replacing the two-dimensional pit-land structures currently found on CDs and DVDs with microgratings, which are "holographically induced" using two laser beams. In other words, instead of recording to a series of bumps and pits like standard CDs, the new technology creates three-dimensional holographic grids that can be used for reading and writing data throughout the physical structure of the disc.

In order to store data in multi-layer form, the beam is "focused to different depths inside the photopolymer layer," which means that the beam can actually be raised and lowered to write to different altitudes of the three-dimensional holograohic grid.

As you might expect, the project is bullish on its prospects. The discs are predicted to be inexpensive to produce, which the project hopes will translate into manufacturer interest. Of course, there's no word on what the recording devices would cost, and that's a major part of the equation.

Blu-ray discs currently store 50GB of data on a dual-layer disc, whereas HD-DVD can store 30GB on its dual-layer offering. Both formats have greater storage potential thanks to the possibility of adding additional layers. By 2010, we expect to see 100GB and 60GB Blu-ray and HD DVD discs (respectively) available for recording use on PCs.

Microholographic discs (MHD) are transparent and are the same physical size as CDs and DVDs, but the discs being created by the Microholas Project effectively have ten layers with five different wavelengths. The "prototype" discs are recordable and sport a 50Mb/s data rate, but the group expects an "Advanced Device" with 1TB of storage and data transfer speeds in excess of 200Mb/s by 2010."

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-07-09T02:03:01Z</dcterms:modified>

How Big Will the Apple iPhone Be?

In an article for Business Week, Peter Burrows writes, "Few stocks trade on emotion the way Apple Inc. does. Its rip-roaring initial public offering in 1980 created the template for modern tech mania, while making Steve Jobs a gazillionaire. When the company fell on hard times in the mid-1990s, no amount of good news could pierce the cloud of doom hanging over investors. Now, with the launch of the hugely hyped iPhone in a few weeks, momentum investors are driving Apple (AAPL) shares to unexplored territory. The stock has doubled in the past year, to 122. Apple's market cap recently topped $100 billion for the first time.

Hard as it is to believe, all the excitement surrounding Jobs and his new toy may actually understate the impact of this device on Apple's fortunes. Beyond the hysteria surrounding its June 29 launch, the iPhone has the potential for adding a totally new, $10 billion-a-year business within just a few years. If Apple can expand so-called smartphones from a luxury carried by corporate road warriors into an everyday tool for the masses—combining the functions of a BlackBerry and an iPod—Apple could soon see a new growth tear."

Apple Inc.'s highly anticipated iPhone will be available June 29, 2007. The combination cell phone, media player and wireless Web-surfing device will retail for $499 and $599, depending on configuration. It will be offered exclusively by AT&T Inc.'s wireless division, formerly known as Cingular.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-06-12T17:37:28Z</dcterms:modified>

Microsoft Surface (a.k.a.
The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) on Tuesday paved the way for the next-generation of Bluetooth, which will be capable of transferring data over 100 times faster than current devices. The wireless technology will be used for the streaming of audio and video in the home.

The WiMedia Alliance's multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MB-OFDM) version of ultra-wideband (UWB) was chosen for the new Bluetooth standard. Tech industry heavyweights such as Intel, Microsoft, Sony and Nokia are among those supporting the effort.

Despite the upgrade, Bluetooth will retain its current low-power uses in devices such as cell phones, keyboards and mice. The updated technology, which will operate at frequencies above 6 GHz to avoid regulatory issues, will remain short-range at 10-15 meters and serves a different purpose from Wi-Fi. | Source: BetaNews

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2006-03-29T01:44:42Z</dcterms:modified>

Sony sets date for rollout of next-generation DVDs

Sony Pictures on Tuesday said it aims to deliver its new Blu-ray DVD format to U.S. stores on May 23 to coincide with the entry of compatible disc players, a new step in an industry war for control of home movie viewing.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and MGM Home Entertainment will first release eight Blu-ray titles, followed by another eight in mid-June. The first movie titles include "50 First Dates," "The Fifth Element," "Hitch" and "House of Flying Daggers."

Blu-ray is locked in a multibillion-dollar standards war against a rival DVD format known as HD DVD. The technology companies supporting HD DVD, championed by Toshiba Corp. (6502.T), plan to start rolling out movie titles and disc players in March.

Each side hopes to reignite a sagging $24 billion home video market with new players and discs that offer greater capacity and interactive features.

As transistor-based microchips hit the limits of Moore's Law, a group of electrical engineers at the University of Notre Dame has fabricated a chip that uses nanoscale magnetic "islands" to juggle the ones and zeroes of binary code.

Wolfgang Perod and his colleagues turned to the process of magnetic patterning (.pdf) to produce a new chip that uses arrays of separate magnetic domains. Each island maintains its own magnetic field.

Because the chip has no wires, its device density and processing power may eventually be much higher than transistor-based devices. And it won't be nearly as power-hungry, which will translate to less heat emission and a cooler future for portable hardware like laptops.

Computers using the magnetic chips would boot up almost instantly. The magnetic chip's memory is non-volatile, making it impervious to power interruptions, and it retains its data when the device is switched off.

The magnetic architecture of the chip can be reprogrammed on the fly and its adaptability could make it very popular with manufacturers of special-purpose computing hardware, from video-game platforms to medical diagnostic equipment. [ more... ]

ATI's latest All-in-Wonder card, the AIW X1900 uses the company's latest and great GPU, borrowed from the X1900 series gaming cards, and includes video capturing and editing capabilities as well as an integrated television tuner complete with PVR and TV On-Demand functions. The X1900 GPU is a remarkable processor that performs extremely well in 3D environments; perfect for gamers. We have always been impressed with the premise behind the All-In-Wonder philosophy and we are still surprised to see ATI the only video card company to implement a product-line behind a video card that basically does everything. Previous All-In-Wonder cards that we have reviewed have pretty much been hit or miss, so we are excited to see what ATI has brought to the table this time around. [ more... ]

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2006-02-08T18:11:25Z</dcterms:modified>

IBM produces new high-bandwidth wireless chip

IBM has produced a wireless chip based on the evolving 802.15.3c specification, which is capable of passing high-definition files and other content at distances of up to 10 metres.

TOKYO — Will the digital age bring an end to squabbles over which TV channel to watch? Sharp Corp. is coming out with a new product that may help. The Japanese electronics firm has developed a liquid-crystal display that shows totally different images to people viewing the screen from the left and the right.

A model holds up a mirror, demonstrating Sharp's innovative new LCD,.

Toshifumi Kitamura, Getty Images

The "two-way viewing-angle LCD," announced by the Japanese consumer electronics maker Thursday, can send light from the backlight separately to the right and left.

And so one person can be surfing the Internet, using the display as a PC screen, while another watches a downloaded movie or TV broadcast. It also works for watching two TV channels: one person can watch baseball while another watches a soap opera.

for the HD- (HD- DVD ) and Blu-ray Disc (BD) camps. We actually wondered which wanted to limit their creativity with 15GB (HD) or expand their horizons with 25GB (single layer) and 50GB (double layer) capacity for their fantastic next generation video content and extras.

We thought about all the TV folks planning fantastic entertainment what they can beam to our digital TV sets with thrilling effects we can time-shift, copy and enjoy anywhere in the house or on the road.

We studied the HD and BD format approaches and tried to see how Hollywood and the TV folks could force the two parties to the table and hammer out a compromise.

As we slowly stepped back from our hours of research and stared at the papers strewn across the floor we had an epiphany: Those folks not only don't care which blue write-once and rewritable technology the industry delivers…they don't want either one!

All they want is a high definition ROM – a disc you can buy, rent or borrow that allows you to view their movie, their TV series, their music audio and not copy.

Does the consumer care? Sure, eventually. But at the present time a next-generation storage device/medium is low on his and her priority list because they need/want to buy new DTV sets, new cam-phones, new game systems, new PCs. Then they need to struggle to interconnect them to share devices/content…even if it is the use of the printer." [ More...
"The police are watching. And in Chicago, they're listening, too. City officials are using new technology that recognizes the sound of a gunshot within a two-block radius, pinpoints the source, turns a surveillance camera toward the shooter and places a 911 call. Officials can then track the shooter and dispatch officers to the scene.

"Instead of just having eyes, you have the advantage of both eyes and ears,'' said Bryan Baker, chief executive officer of Safety Dynamics in Oak Brook, which makes the systems.

After a successful pilot program, Chicago officials have installed 30 of the devices alongside video surveillance cameras in high-crime neighborhoods, with 12 more on the way, and dozens more to follow, Baker said." | Source: Illinois Wire

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2005-07-07T15:21:24Z</dcterms:modified>

Digital TV Transmitter Using a VGA card

An anonymous reader writes "Yet Another Project from Fabrice Bellard : with any PC and a standard VGA card, you can build a real Analog or DVB-T Digital TV transmitter by directly generating the VHF signal. Regardless, they appear to be continuing talks, but it’s not the best of signs for peace in the home theater. | Source: Engadget.com

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2005-05-16T15:33:03Z</dcterms:modified>

Remington 870

Take a look at the new Remington 870, "With increased terrorist threats, natural disasters and potentially hostile situations, first responders have a need for improve readiness, response and recovery.
Remington’s Eye Ball R1 is easily deployed and provides officers with "360° tactical vision" required by entry & operations teams."

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2005-04-30T18:02:08Z</dcterms:modified>

The MPEG 4 video recorder

"A company called Taxane will start selling this video recorder in Japan. The machine will offer 2 quality levels: 320x240 15fps or 210x145 15fps. 320x240 seems to be acceptable, but what's with the 15fps? This is really not enough. You can expect a price below 130 EUR for this device." | Source: Akiha bara News

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2005-04-25T15:14:42Z</dcterms:modified>

Mind-reading machine knows what you see

"It is possible to read someone’s mind by remotely measuring their brain activity, researchers have shown. The technique can even extract information from subjects that they are not aware of themselves.
So far, it has only been used to identify visual patterns a subject can see or has chosen to focus on. But the researchers speculate the approach might be extended to probe a person’s awareness, focus of attention, memory and movement intention. In the meantime, it could help doctors work out if patients apparently in a coma are actually conscious.
Scientists have already trained monkeys to move a robotic arm with the power of thought and to recreate scenes moving in front of cats by recording information directly from the feline’s neurons (New Scientist print edition, 2 October 1999). But these processes involve implanting electrodes into their brains to hook them up to a computer.
Now Yukiyasu Kamitani, at ATR Computational Neuroscience Laboratories in Kyoto, Japan, and Frank Tong at Princeton University in New Jersey, US, have achieved similar “mind reading” feats remotely using functional MRI scanning. " [ more... ]

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2005-04-25T14:51:43Z</dcterms:modified>

Shrinking camcorder gets tinier

Camcorder makers have performed incredible shrinking feats with their product designs in recent months, so much so that just about the only thing preventing them from diminishing their wares further is the size of the video cassette itself. [ more... therefore, it is most suitable for the over 40-inch FPD (flat-panel display) TV market, he added." [ more... ]

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2005-04-22T22:30:45Z</dcterms:modified>

On again, off again? Sony, Toshiba Mull Unified Format to Avoid DVD War

"Japan's Sony Corp. and Toshiba Corp. are in talks to develop a common standard for next-generation DVDs and end a fierce battle over formats that has been threatening to stifle the industry's growth.
Sony and Toshiba, heading rival groups, have waged a three-year battle to have their new technology standards adopted by the industry and gain pole position in the multi-billion dollar markets for DVD players, PC drives and optical disks.
While a final deal is still far from certain, both camps are well aware that a drawn-out fight would likely confuse consumers and hinder the industry's development, just like the famous spat between the VHS and Betamax video tape formats two decades ago.
"Toshiba believes a single format will benefit consumers. But closer questioning of companies on both sides points to no significant change in their positions, and the continued likelihood that consumers will be forced choose between two competing formats.
Sony is the main backer of Blu-ray Disc, a format that has picked up the support of many major consumer electronics makers, while HD-DVD counts NEC and Toshiba as its main backers. Both formats have been designed to hold high-definition movies, and both are being promoted as a replacement for current DVD-Video, which cannot support high-definition TV.
HD-DVD is promised before the end of this year, while Blu-ray Disc based players and movies aren't expected until sometime in 2006.
With no compromise in sight, consumers are faced with a battle between the two formats that has been repeatedly compared to the VHS versus Betamax competition in the early days of the video cassette. [ more... ]

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2005-04-20T15:53:21Z</dcterms:modified>

'Minority Report' interface created for US military

New Scientist is carrying an article from The Wall Street Journal stating that, "A computer interface inspired by the futuristic system portrayed in the movie Minority Report, starring Tom Cruise, could soon help real military personnel deal with information overload.
The film sees characters call up and manipulate video footage and other data in mid-air after donning a special pair of gloves. Now defence company Raytheon, based in Massachusetts, US, is working on a real version and has even employed John Underkoffler, the researcher who proposed the interface to the makers of the film.
Underkoffler is a science and technology consultant for Treadle and Loam Provisioners in California, US, and previously developed radical computer interfaces at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The analysts write that it would "seem imprudent" for the company to discontinue the current Xbox "given that Xbox 2 would probably not be available in sufficient quantities to meet demand for the seasonally strong December quarter." They note that their conversations with the company suggest it is, in fact, "unlikely" that Microsoft will stop shipping the current Xbox after releasing the new one.
Meanwhile, Xbox Live's Major Nelson is literally counting down the seconds until the program airs."

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2005-04-13T21:43:45Z</dcterms:modified>

Forrester Research Says that 12.3 million people will be listening to podcasts in 2010

Thomas Hawk writes, "Forrester Research Defines The Future Of Digital Audio -- New Report Forecasts Growth Of Satellite Radio And Podcasting: "Podcasting, which is the newest entrant into the digital audio mix, will see significant growth by 2010 -- reaching 12.3 million households -- as MP3 adoption climbs and broadband reaches 62 percent of households." Personally I think that it will be higher than this -- but then again a lot of this depends on when Howard Stern and Sirius will begin offering podcast downloads of his day old content. HD is in fact a generic term for all types of signals whose resolution is higher than standard video images with a resolution of 720 pixels wide by 480 (NTSC) or 576 (PAL) lines. For the moment, there is no real HD standard - the US uses a system called ATSC, whereas Europe uses DVBS. To better understand the difference between an NTSC 525-line or PAL 625-line signal and the HDTV format, you have to keep in mind that the resolution is doubled horizontally as well as vertically. So theoretically the image is four times better in terms of resolution. [ more... ]

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2005-04-13T20:15:22Z</dcterms:modified>

NEC Japan unveils All-in-one PC TV

"NEC presented a desktop version of their AV PC (Audio Video PC) W900. Together, these publishers have sold more than half a billion copies of current-generation Xbox console video games worldwide and represent approximately 70 percent of all current-generation console games sold in 2004.*
"The key to bringing the vision for the HD Era of gaming to life is our partners: world-class publishers and developers that have molded and shaped the history of interactive entertainment for tens of millions of gamers worldwide," said Peter Moore, corporate vice president of Xbox global content and marketing at Microsoft. "This stellar lineup of publishers and developers is poised to deliver games experiences our customers only dreamed were possible, and is ultimately committed to elevating video games to be the No. 1 form of entertainment." [ more... ]

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2005-04-08T20:29:15Z</dcterms:modified>

STUDIOS: For Now VOD is DOA

New technology might capture headlines, but so far it's not doing much for the bottom lines of the studios or their parent companies, a panel of media moguls said here last week.

Appearing together at the National Cable Show, sponsored by the National Cable and Telecommunications Assn., top execs from Disney, NBC-Universal, News Corp. and Time Warner all but dismissed video-on-demand as a serious competitor to DVD for the next five years.

"You can't put any food on the table today with VOD," NBC-Universal chief Robert Wright said. "Maybe five years from now, VOD will develop into something. That's the tantalising prospect raised by a patent on a device for transmitting sensory data directly into the human brain - granted to none other than the entertainment giant Sony.
The technique suggested in the patent is entirely non-invasive. It describes a device that fires pulses of ultrasound at the head to modify firing patterns in targeted parts of the brain, creating "sensory experiences" ranging from moving images to tastes and sounds. This could give blind or deaf people the chance to see or hear, the patent claims.
While brain implants are becoming increasingly sophisticated, the only non-invasive ways of manipulating the brain remain crude. A technique known as transcranial magnetic stimulation can activate nerves by using rapidly changing magnetic fields to induce currents in brain tissue. However, magnetic fields cannot be finely focused on small groups of brain cells, whereas ultrasound could be. [ more... ]

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2005-04-07T18:49:37Z</dcterms:modified>

Cable and Tech Bigwigs Make Nice

Strange bedfellows met this week in San Francisco as cable companies and tech gurus put their suits and pocket protectors together in a concerted effort to make boatloads of money.
The event was the National Cable Show, the cable industry's annual convention. At stake is the melding of broadband pipes and digital television into a new series of products that leverage the strength of Hollywood, Silicon Valley and Wall Street.
The cable industry wants consumers to use their cable service to record and time-shift TV programs, play online video games, call up video-on-demand, or VOD, content on a whim, access the internet and replace their old telephone company with voice over internet protocol, or VOIP, service.
In many cases, consumers may have trouble discerning between the different services. And that seems to be the point.
"We're going to see that the internet and television are really two sides of the same sheet of paper," said Gary Stein, a senior analyst at Jupiter Research.
Such talk of "convergence" has been bubbling for years within the cable industry with limited results to show for it. But if comments this week were any indication, cable operators and tech companies are starting to project renewed confidence -- along with the realization that they need each other to turn visions into reality. [ more...
